The overall experiences and progress of children and young people living in the home: Outstanding

Young people enjoy excellent support to move on to independence in a way which best meets their needs. Staff keep in touch with young people once they have left the home, making contact with them at Christmas and on their birthdays for example. In acknowledgement of the appreciation felt by a young person who recently moved, he wrote in a letter:

'The past four years have been by far the most fun, happiest and memorable four years of my life.'

How well children and young people are helped and protected: Outstanding

One of the most significant strengths of the home is the ability of staff to achieve meaningful relationships with young people. This helps young people to develop trust in adults. One young person said of staff:

'I can tell anybody anything.'

The impact and effectiveness of leaders and managers: Outstanding

The manager and staff work closely as a team and continually look for new and innovative ways to make life better for children and young people. Staff feel well supported through training, supervision and team meetings. They feel that there is plenty of opportunity to gain new skills.

Dove House

The overall experiences and progress of children and young people living in the home: Outstanding

Young people are actively supported to attend education, and they achieve academically and vocationally. A young person has recently achieved 100% education attendance. This is significant progress after two years of non-school attendance and where, previously, they would not even write their own name because of fear of failure. After extensive support, another young person is now meeting their expected attainment targets. A tutor said:

'You can see the progress that is being made even over a short period of time. The young person's historical barriers to learning are coming down.'

How well children and young people are helped and protected: Outstanding

Young people are protected from harm by a staff team that is knowledgeable and able to recognise and respond to safeguarding needs. Staff know young people very well and build up strong relationships with them. This helps staff to recognise the subtle changes in behaviours that may indicate increased risk of harm, and to which staff respond quickly.

The impact and effectiveness of leaders and managers: Outstanding

The manager has created a supportive environment in which staff can reflect, challenge and change practice to achieve positive outcomes for young people. It was noted by a professional that the staff are not resistant to change, and commented that, as a result:

'They are genuinely making a difference for individual young people.'

The overall experiences and progress of children and young people living in the home: Outstanding

Young people have also benefited extensively from accessing therapy to build their emotional resilience and good mental health and well-being. This has considerably enhanced their current and long-term health outcomes.

How well children and young people are helped and protected: Outstanding

Young people profit from the emphasis on positive behaviour, with rewards, incentives and praise. As a result, negative behaviour subsides and reduces over time. A young person said:

'The staff are fair. I get lots of rewards, especially when I'm doing well in education'; and 'There is no bullying. Staff would stop it if it happened.'

The impact and effectiveness of leaders and managers: Outstanding

Professionals report that the staff communicate and work exceptionally well with them. A social worker said:

'The staff team is highly engaging and supportive with X. I receive regular updates and I am informed of any problems. The care given is keeping X safe. The communication is excellent. I find the staff team proactive and flexible. This is a very good service.'

The overall experiences and progress of children and young people living in the home: Outstanding

Children and young people experience an exceptional level of care. This is because staff support them to manage the dynamics of group living and build harmonious relationships. This enables children and young people to sustain long-term placements, providing them with stability and an unmistakable sense of permanence when this is part of their care plan and belonging.

How well children and young people are helped and protected: Outstanding
Staff work very effectively with relevant agencies to formulate plans and strategies to promote the safety and well-being of young people. This means that any concerns or risks identified are quickly reduced through prompt implementation.

The impact and effectiveness of leaders and managers: Outstanding

The registered manager has managed the home since 2014. She is well qualified and forward thinking, continually striving to improve the quality of care provided to children and young people. She is described as a 'motivational leader', who ensures that her team shares her ethos and vision for the home so that they can make a real difference to the lives of children and young people.
